Sacrament of Confirmation

Middle School and High School Youth Preparation

Confirmation Assignments

As we prepare for Confirmation, our goal is to put into practice a life that is formed by our Catholic faith. This means being attentive to, and applying the teachings and practices of the Church to our everyday lives and activities. Please complete the assignments, which will help you connect what we learn in class to real-world practice. These are ideally to be completed with your sponsor, if possible, so that he or she can guide you in how to truly allow the Gifts of the Holy Spirit to lead you closer to Christ.

Each response/assignment should be a minimum of one-half page, and can be either typed, printed, and turned in, or typed into an online document that can be emailed, or hand-written on regular paper. Please also be sure to include your name, your sponsor’s name, and the date.

PRAYER JOURNAL

Starting and keeping a prayer journal, completing one entry per day. Ideally, they should be reflecting on the Nicene Creed, but are also welcome to pray and reflect on any other devotional they like, as long as they make time for the Nicene Creed as well.

WHAT ARE THE 7 SACRAMENTS?

Research and write a description about the 7 Sacraments of the Catholic Church, telling what they are and what each of their purpose is. They can complete this by writing or typing a paragraph about each, creating a poster, creating a power point, Google Slides or Canva presentation, or any other idea they would like.

GOSPEL & HOMILY SUMMARY

Write about a Sunday Gospel, recalling something that stood out to you. Was there a certain phrase or word that caught your attention? What was the homily about, and how did that help you understand the Gospel reading? You can look for a video of a homily or watch a different Mass on YouTube (searching “Sunday Homily Catholic”) if you cannot remember the homily from our Mass. (Be sure to include the Gospel passage e.g.: reading from June 15th – the Gospel according to John 17:11b-19)

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE POPE?

First, write about one thing you found interesting about our new Pope, Leo XIV. He is usually visiting different countries and meeting with different world leaders to discuss global topics. Write about where he is currently or what the last country he visited was, and what he did while he was there. Who did he meet with? You can complete this as an essay, a slide show, a poster, or another type of project you’d like.

EUCHARISTIC MIRACLES

The Holy Eucharist remains the source and summit of our faith. As such, our Lord continuously communicates His love for us through the miracles He allows us to witness. Research Eucharistic Miracles and write about one that caught your attention: What was the miracle? When and where did it happen? What was the scientific approach the Church used when investigating? What are your thoughts? For this assignment, you might need to allow more time and space to write, or you can decide to do a different kind of project. These may be discussed in our small groups. There is a lot of information, and you still want to be able to include your own thoughts on it, so make sure to carefully plan out how you will put it all together!

SAINT RESEARCH & PATRONAGE

(this one can be completed however you’d like. You can write about the Saint, you can make a poster, you can build something in his or her honor, or you can get creative and do a different type of project. It should be personal to you!)

For this assignment, you will be researching a specific Saint who seems interesting to you, or who draws your attention. Try to find out as much as you can about this person, and decide what makes their lives special, and how you think you can relate to him or her. The best way to start this one is to set aside some time to pray, ask your Guardian Angel to help show you which Saint you should choose. This Saint will be your best friend in Heaven for the rest of your life and will be praying for you in a special way after you commend yourself to their care at your Confirmation. Be sure to search profoundly and make an authentic choice.
